DCs for Bees – Orchards in the Community

Orchards in the Community is the latest addition to the DCs for Bees initiative, the movement led by Host in Ireland to help save Ireland’s declining bee population.

What is the issue?

Bee pollination contributes to 70% of the world’s food source. The success of our species is dependent on theirs! We are set to lose almost 90% of our bumblebees in Ireland by 2050 at the current rate of decline and last year alone they were down by 24% on the previous year. There are 98 species of bee in Ireland, nearly one third are threatened with extinction!

Orchards are important habitats as they support many species of flora and fauna, and in particular, the 99 species of bees in Ireland, of which 30% are facing extinction. Orchards play a key role in providing an early food source for our struggling bees as they emerge from winter.

Kedington are proud to be one of the initial 50 organisations from the Irish data centre community to have donated towards the planting of 1000 orchards across Ireland in the 2021-2022 planting season.

Working in collaboration with the Irish National Biodiversity Centre this project will also enable Ireland for the first time to track concurrent pollination success.

Keep an eye out for more details released throughout the year.
